The thing that sucks about mental illness is that if you aren’t depressed enough, suicidal enough, bad enough, nobody cares. Nobody cares until you reach their standard, and that standard is when your problem is bad enough to effect them

The amount of people who can relate to this makes me equally incredibly sad and immensely angry

Extra Life began in 2008 as a way of honoring a young lady named Victoria Enmon. Tori’s battle against acute lymphoblastic leukemia inspired the Sarcastic Gamer Community in a way that is difficult to describe. Members sent in video games and bought gifts to keep Tori’s spirits up despite numerous hospital stays and three bouts with the deadly disease.
Tragically, we lost Tori to cancer in January 2008. Later that year, I asked my partners at Sarcastic Gamer if they would be interested in Extra Life, a 24-hour video game marathon to raise money for the hospital that treated and fought beside Tori. In 2008 and 2009 Extra Life raised a combined $302,000, 100 percent of which went directly to help kids like Tori at my local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital (Texas Children’s Hospital).
While thousands of gamers, more than 100 websites and more than 12,000 donors were happy to support Extra Life, many expressed their desire to raise money to help kids closer to home. In what I can only consider destiny, in 2009 I left behind my radio career and went to work full-time for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals as a Radiothon Director. This life-changing event gave me unique insight into an incredible non-profit organization that helps kids all over the United States and Canada.
I quickly realized that Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals would be the perfect solution to expand Extra Life into more communities.
This year, when you sign up to play games for 24 hours this year, you won’t just be raising money for kids. You’ll be supporting LOCAL kids and their families. Kids right in your own backyard.
All the money you raise for Extra Life 2014 will go directly to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital of your choice.
I also encourage you to learn more about your local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital and to meet some of the kids we’ll be working to help.

Hello people! Just wanted to tell all of you about Extra-life, a charity for raising money Children’s Miracle Network hospitals all around the world! What you do is play video games for 24 hours straight while you tell your friends, family, neighbors anyone you can reach to help sponsor you to raise money for your local Children’s Miracle Network hospital. Fun way to help kids in the hospital right? Here is how you can register:
Register and create your personal fundraising page.
Try to get four friends or family members to sponsor you at $1 per hour ($24 each).
Sit on your rear end and play all types of games for 24 hours.  We will be putting in our game play on Saturday, October 25th, beginning at 8 a.m.
The great thing about though is that it’s for any type of gamer. If you like to play bored games, Magic the Gathering, sports, poker, any type of game you can help raise money for these hospitals. Just sign up, spread the word and then get friends together and play for a day while you are getting money to help heal the kids in your area.
If you don’t want to join and want to donate that is great too! We need every last one of you to help to raise money for the hospitals we are supporting. You can find people in your area and support them but I am also raising money this year and I’m going to share a little about that and you can donate to me if you want too! I don’t have many people to reach out to to help donate.
For a couple years my dad has been working at Rainbow Babies and Children’s hospital and was a part of this program called the Rainbow Channel. He was a digital communications specialist but got to be with the kids with the Rainbow Channel doing game shows and live events with guests. We have had superheroes come and princesses and plays and all these great things to help distract the kids from what they are struggling with there in the hospital. Rainbow has Child life specialists and music/art therapy to help the kids too and have games rooms, all to help these kid have fun while they’re stuck there. Thing is those programs and stuff they do there aren’t covered by insurance but are needed to help those kids keep their heads high in their battle with the illnesses they are going through. I have been volunteering at that hospital for 2 years and have worked in the library there and then I ran the game shows and worked behind the scenes with other fundraising events such as Saint Baldricks Foundation. I have volunteered over 600 hours in that place and to be there giving prizes to these sick kids and being the person to put a smile on there face meant a lot to me. Sadly I have had no way to get there to volunteer each week anymore and so I’m taking this time to raise money while I’m not there. We have an event in house for the kids there so I’ll be volunteering that day to get it all set up and the kids will be able to play with the team. But we need YOU to help donate! We raised a lot of money in the two years we have done it there in the hospital, let’s blow this years out of the water!
Donate here to help Rainbow! We need you!
Thank you so much for reading this and please reblog so we can get the word out of this great way to help kids in need. Pass it on!
